# Net worth

> Everything you own, minus everything you owe.

One number: your assets less your liabilities, over time.

## Where the data comes from

The module needs no separate data entry. It works from what is already there:

- account balances from the Accounts module,
- valuations of things worth money (a flat, a car, equipment),
- outstanding loan amounts,
- debt balances.

## Valuations carry history

A valuable thing has a **history of valuations**, not one value. A flat bought
for 500,000 and worth 620,000 today is two different numbers, and both are
true at their own moment.

## The chart

The chart shows the change over time. A single number says little — it is the
direction and the pace that give you something to act on.

## Valuables

You add a thing with a category (property, vehicle, jewellery, electronics,
collectible, investment, other) and the date you acquired it. **"Revalue"**
adds a new value for a chosen date; earlier valuations stay in the history.

Something you sold gets a disposal date. From that day it no longer counts
towards your net worth, but its valuation history stays, so the past of the
chart does not change.

## How often to revalue

A car loses value quickly, a flat changes slowly. Once a year is enough, or
after a notable event — a similar flat nearby selling, or damage. More
frequent valuations do not give a more accurate picture, just more noise.

## Assets and liabilities

The summary splits your net worth into cash in accounts, valuables, card debt
and loans. The chart is worked out from balance readings, valuations and loan
schedules.
