Black Friday budget 2026: set a spending limit before the sales start
Black Friday 2026 is on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November. How to set a Black Friday budget from your monthly plan, write the list before the deals appear, and check whether a discount actually saves money.
Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November, the day after Thanksgiving, and Cyber Monday on 30 November. The cheapest way through it is to decide two things before the first deal email arrives: the total you can spend, and the list of things you were going to buy anyway. Then the sales can only make that list cheaper. They cannot make it longer.
Step 1: find the number before you see the deals
A Black Friday budget is not a separate pot of money. It comes out of something: this month's flexible spending, a holiday fund, or savings. Pick the source first.
- From the monthly budget. Look at what is left for wants after bills and savings. In the 50/30/20 rule that is the 30% share, and Black Friday spending competes with everything else in it for November.
- From the Christmas fund. If you plan to buy gifts during the sales, the money is already in your Christmas budget. Black Friday is then a date to spend part of it, not extra money on top.
- From savings. Only for a planned large purchase (a laptop, a washing machine) you were already saving for.
Write the number down. A limit you only keep in your head moves when you see a countdown timer.
Step 2: write the list now
Make the list in October or early November, when nothing is on sale:
| Item | Why I need it | Normal price | Max I will pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter boots | old pair is worn through | $120 | $90 |
| Gift for Sam | on the Christmas list | $60 | $45 |
| Air fryer | replacing the broken one | $110 | $80 |
| Total | $290 | $215 |
The "max I will pay" column does the work. If the price on the day is higher, you wait or buy elsewhere. If the item never goes on sale, you buy it at the normal price when you need it, and nothing is lost.
Anything not on the list gets one question: would I buy this at full price this month? If the answer is no, the discount is not a saving.
Step 3: check that the discount is real
- Record today's prices. Add the current price to your list now. Some retailers raise prices in the weeks before the sale so that the discount looks larger.
- Compare the delivered price. Shipping, sales tax and return costs can close the gap with a store that was not running a promotion.
- Watch subscriptions. Black Friday is a favourite moment to sell annual plans and "first three months for $1" trials. Each one is a future bill. If you take one, put the renewal date in your calendar the same day, and see the subscription checklist for the ones already running.
- Buy now, pay later is still spending. Splitting a payment into four does not change the total. Count the full price against your limit.
Step 4: track while you shop
Keep a running total during the weekend, not after it. Every order goes on the list with its actual price. When the total reaches the limit, you are done, even if there are still deals left.
Returns count only when the refund arrives. Until then, the money is spent.
What to do with what you did not spend
If you set $300 and spent $215, the $85 difference is the real Black Friday saving. Move it on purpose, the same day, to the Christmas fund or to savings. Left in the checking account, it usually disappears into December.
Common questions
When is Black Friday 2026?
Friday 27 November 2026. Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November and Cyber Monday is 30 November. Many stores start their sales a week or more earlier.
How much should I spend on Black Friday?
Only what fits in your plan for the month, or what was already set aside for a planned purchase. There is no good benchmark from other people's spending: the right number comes from your own budget.
Is it better to shop on Black Friday or Cyber Monday?
For items on your list, compare both and buy whichever price meets your limit first. The day matters less than the list.
